Freedom Planet is a 2D platform video game developed and published by GalaxyTrail, a studio set up by designer Stephen DiDuro. The player controls one of three anthropomorphic animal protagonists: the dragon Lilac, the wildcat Carol, or the basset hound Milla. Aided by the duck-like Torque, the player attempts to defeat Lord Brevon, who plans to conquer the galaxy. While the game focuses on fast-paced platforming, its levels are interspersed with slower action scenes.

Freedom Planet began development as a Sonic the Hedgehog fangame, but DiDuro lost interest in creating a derivative work and reconceived the project as his own intellectual property. He visited the website DeviantArt to recruit artist Ziyo Ling, who replaced the existing cast of characters with her own. Lilac, originally a hedgehog, became a dragon; antagonist Doctor Eggman was replaced by Brevon; and the Sonic series' ring-based health system was abandoned. Further changes were suggested by fans and incorporated throughout development. Freedom Planet was developed in Denmark and the United States and its art direction has East Asian influences: its background visuals were inspired by medieval Chinese art, and the game's title is written in katakana.

The game was released for Microsoft Windows, first as a demo in August 2012, then, after a successful Kickstarter campaign, as a full game via Steam in July 2014. The game was later released on the Wii U in October 2015, on the PlayStation 4 in 2017, and on the Nintendo Switch in August 2018. Freedom Planet has been widely compared to the early Sonic games. Critics praised its gameplay, aesthetics, and balance of Sonic elements with original content, but were mixed on its pacing and length. A sequel, Freedom Planet 2, will be released in 2020.

    Gameplay

Freedom Planet is a 2D platform and action game featuring anthropomorphized animal characters and 16-bit style graphics mimicking the look of games released for the Sega Genesis, particularly the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The game puts players in the role of one of the available playable characters as they traverse each level, fighting enemies and obstacles before facing a boss at the end. Players have a health meter, which can be replenished by collecting red leaves, and a regenerative energy meter used to perform each character's unique special moves.

We've recruited a number of talented faces, old and new, to help bring Freedom Planet 2 to the next level.

    Stephen DiDuro - Executive Producer

Mr. DiDuro is GalaxyTrail's founder and an independent developer who spearheaded Freedom Planet 1's production. Since 2011, he's been a professional game designer and now manages a multinational team of coders, artists, voice actors, and writers. His passion lies with tight and colorful action games that reward skill but are easily accessible.
Dawn M. Bennett - Associate Producer

Our fans might know Ms. Bennett as the voice of Lilac, but she has also been instrumental in the recruitment of new talent. In addition to voice acting, her core duties include schedule management, talent coordination, proofreading, and on occasion, graphic design and health advisory.
Tyson Tan - Concept Art / Character Design

You may have seen Tyson's detailed fanart of the main characters of the first game. We were so enthralled by his dedication that we just had to sign him on for the sequel! He'll work closely with us to create the core, official models of each character.
    Ziyo Ling - Promotional Art

We are happy to announce that the creator of Lilac, Carol, and Milla has joined us for the sequel! She has given us her blessing to proceed and we have commissioned her to create promotional artwork of the characters.
Rafael Ventura - Pixel Art / Animation

You might be familiar with Rafael’s animation work in Skullgirls and Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, among others. He's no stranger to 3D and traditional art as well! We're super excited to have him helping us create fluid, bouncy character animations.
    Picsandpixels - Pixel Art

Pixy did most of the shading for the character sprites in the first game, and we're happy to say that she's back on board for the sequel. As the final link in the artistic chain, she'll be in charge of shading our characters and tweaking the color palettes of sprites and environments.
Daniel Taylor - Animation / Environment Design

Daniel, known more commonly online as DanSyron, is a freelance animator who created our teaser trailer for Freedom Planet 2. He'll work with us to bring the world of Avalice to life. He has a great eye for detail and will help design the backgrounds and tiles of some of the new stages.
    Tim Jonsson - Background Artist

Freedom Planet 2's increased resolution gives us a lot of opportunity to create some genuinely lovely, 2D fighting game-esque background art. Tim has joined us for this task and his work so far has easily reached our expectations!
    Christian Whitehead - Engine Programming

Whitehead, a.k.a. Taxman, is known for developing the iOS ports of Sonic the Hedgehog CD, 1 and 2 alongside Simon Thomley (Stealth), where they recreated the original games with additional features and secrets perfectly. Whitehead has created Freedom Planet 2's engine in Unity and continues to provide valuable support and feedback while we expand on his work.
    Leila Wilson - Musician

Leila, a.k.a. Woofle, is back for Round 2! With a style that defined the tone of the first game, we just couldn't leave her behind. She'll be at the forefront of the ingame soundtrack.
    Falk Au Yeong - Musician

Falk is the audio engineer of the Video Game Orchestra and has worked on the music of multiple Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts titles. He also has an extensive freelance career. Falk will be working with us in a consultancy role along with mastering the soundtrack release, and we can't wait to hear what he does next!
    Akash Thakkar - Audio Mixing

Akash created the sound effects for our trailer. He has designed sounds for a multitude of indie games including the upcoming hit Hyper Light Drifter, and we are most satisfied with his contributions so far!
    Jason Lord - Audio Mixing

Jason provides the voices for Serpentine and Gong, but did you know that he also does sound effects? He'll be helping us cook up some new ones!
    Brett Apitz - Audio Mixing

Brett contributed sound design to Bioshock Infinite, Spec Ops: The Line, Dust 514, and over a dozen other productions. His work placecs emphasis on the melodic qualities of sound, and we're excited to see what he'll come up with!
    Alejandro Saab - Voice Director

We're taking great steps to ensure that the voice acting in Freedom Planet 2 is improved. To make this happen, Alejandro Saab a.k.a. KaggyFilms will direct our voice actors. This will help our producer Stephen focus on other aspects of development.
Christopher Sabat - Audio and Voice Recording

For those who grew up on English-dubbed cartoons and anime, Mr. Sabat needs no introduction! He is best known for his roles as Vegeta and Piccolo in Dragonball Z and Roronoa Zoro in One Piece. Sabat is providing the OkraTron 5000 audio production company in Dallas, Texas, which means that not only will Freedom Planet 2's dialogue be recorded on the best audio equipment available, but Mr. Sabat and his crew will work alongside us to help direct our voice actors and master our audio.
Gabriella Creighton - Web Design and Community Manager

Gabby is at the helm in handling public relations and making spiffy websites. She has redesigned the GalaxyTrail and Freedom Planet sites and organized the release of our recent IndieBox! She is your go-to contact for customer concerns, questions, and anything you'd like to know about our progress.
